Researchers can use tools such as fMRI, which detects changes in blood flow associated with activity in specific brain areas; EEG, which records electrical brain activity; eye-tracking, which measures gaze, eye movements and pupil dilation; and physiological measures such as skin conductance response and heart rate, which capture aspects of autonomic nervous-system activity. These methods can provide implicit measures of responses that may not be fully captured when people are simply asked what they think or feel. 

What We’re Learning About Neuroscience for B2B Marketing

Much of what we know about B2B buyers comes from what they tell us: what they value, why they prefer one supplier, how they evaluate a proposal, or what influences their purchase decision. Neuroscience opens up the possibility of observing some of the processes that sit beneath these conscious responses. 

The research already points to some fascinating possibilities. Eye-tracking has been used to examine attention, recall and attitudes toward B2B advertising; EEG has been used to study the buyer’s role in collaborative business situations; and eye-tracking and facial coding have been used to examine cognitive load during negotiations. Other studies have investigated how stress influences repurchasing decisions, and how personality and the ability to read interpersonal cues may affect sales performance and negotiation. The possibilities extend to questions that are particularly interesting for marketers: how buyers respond to pricing, branding and communication, how trust develops in supplier interactions, how different digital interfaces affect cognitive workload, and whether physiological or neural responses can reveal aspects of a decision before the buyer explicitly articulates them. 

Questions Neuroscience Could Help B2B Marketers Explore

Neuroscience may offer insights about B2B Marketing that conventional research methods don’t. Let’s see some areas that could be explained with the help of neuroscience.

  • When does a B2B buyer actually make up their mind? EEG and fMRI research suggests that neural signals associated with a decision can occur before people become consciously aware of it. Could similar measures identify the point at which a buyer has effectively decided to buy, reject or switch suppliers and before they articulate that decision?
  • What happens when a buyer encounters a price? Rather than asking buyers whether a price “feels high” or “feels fair,” could neural and physiological measures reveal how different prices affect cognitive and emotional responses, and help explain willingness to pay or reactions during price negotiations?
  • Can we observe trust forming during a supplier interaction? We could examine the neural and implicit responses associated with trust formation in personal interactions, including the effect of social cues on decision-making, loyalty and relationships
  • Why does one B2B communication command attention while another is ignored? Eye-tracking, EEG and other measures could be used to examine how buyers process advertising and brand communications; what attracts attention, what creates cognitive or emotional responses, and what is subsequently remembered. This could provide a different way of evaluating B2B advertising effectiveness.
  • Can we measure the mental cost of complexity? One B2B study used pupil responses, eye-gaze fixation and eye saccades to examine cognitive workload when people used different negotiation-support systems. The real promise lies in combining neuroscientific methods with what we already know from B2B research and understand what may be happening cognitively and physiologically as buyers encounter a price, evaluate a proposition, interact with a salesperson or negotiate with a supplier. As neuroscience develops, it could give B2B marketers a new way of looking at some of the least visible parts of the buying process.
